A little ‘hello’ from the dog behind the blog

about us
and an introduction, by the human.

Hi and thanks for stopping by – we appreciate that there’s a lot to read out there on the big wide internet world and we’re glad you chose this. So what is this exactly? Blackandwhitehound is a blog about dogs, inspired by one dog in particular.

suspended greyhound gallop

His name is Atlas and he’s a greyhound, or more precisely, a black and white greyhound. He spent the first 3 years of his life running before he was allowed to relax and live the life of a normal, albeit incredibly spoiled, family dog. A dog who at first was nervous and generally uncomfortable around other dogs has blossomed into a care free fellow dog lover (although said blossoming required a lot of patience and persistence).

After 6 months, Atlas was so well socialised that he earned his green collar, allowing him to go muzzle free in public. He has now been with us for almost a year and continues to show us what a weird and wonderful animal has been hiding away under those spots. His wagging tail must have been what they were talking about when they said ‘the best things in life are free’.

And what about the humans behind the dog? Much less interesting, really.

dog training, commands, naughty

I’m an animal science graduate currently completing a PhD in animal reproduction, working with sheep. I grew up with 3 dogs, and they have always been a huge pleasure in my life. I take an interest in behaviour and training in particular, as I have seen first hand the transformative power of positive reinforcement. That being said, I’m also interested in a lot of other dog related things including nutrition and health and disease. I can’t say I have any interest in genetics, but hey, it’s not for everyone.

If you have any questions, I would love to hear them. My aim is to create a blog that’s fun to read, providing a look at the relevant research that’s often overlooked and helping dog owners to make smart decisions on behalf of their current or future pets. I’ll always give my opinion, but it’s just that – an opinion. You are welcome to give yours too! It’s always good to debate on important issues, and help each other to see things from all sides. Plus lots of other stuff like handy tips, recipes and general dog related ramblings.

With love,
